As the recent news about gambling legislation reports, the gambling authority of Sweden – Spelinspektionen – has issued a new report, assessing the impact of the global pandemic and temporary and limits on the industry overall and problem gambling rates in particular. The regulator has sent the results of the study to the Swedish government for evaluation.

It has been four months since Sweden has lifted temporary responsibility measures for the gambling industry. Among other things the regulations included:

  • Weekly deposit cap of SEK5k for online casinos;
  • SEK5k loss limit for machines;
  • The requirement to specify login time at online casinos and sportsbooks;
  • SEK100 limit on bonus offers.

The Swedish regulator assessed the following factors of the measures:

  • Change in the gaming behavior;
  • Problem gambling rates;
  • The frequency of gambling debt;
  • Compliance of gambling ops;
  • Channelization rates across the gambling companies;
  • Public perception of the temporary regulations.

In the report, Spelinspektionen stated it was difficult to determine the effect the restrictions have had on the public health and gambling addiction rates in the country. According to the gambling authority, it was hard to distinguish which consequences were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and which came from the responsibility measures.

At the same time, Spelinspektionen claims that a uniform limit for all its licensees has a better effect in the long-term perspective.
