As the breaking poker industry news informs, leading iGaming provider PokerStars plans to terminate its operations in Georgia. The poker operator has asked its Georgian players to withdraw their accounts by the end of February, as the company will exit the market on March 1, 2022.
In its official statement, Flutter subsidiary informed that it will repay all bonuses and poker tournament passes to its customers in Georgia.
Gambling reforms likely to have caused the PokerStars exit
Although PokerStars hasn’t listed the reasons for its exit from the Georgian market, the decision comes ahead of the launch of controversial gambling reforms.
At the end of 2021, Georgia’s Prime Minister has passed a bill, increasing the levy on the iGaming sector to 65-70% and raising the legal age for online gambling to 25+.
PM claimed that strict regulations are necessary for civic and economic protection, as GEL1.5 billion has been exported through online gambling.
According to the Georgian media, it is just the first phase of gambling law reforms, which will come into force in Spring 2022. The new regulations will be followed by the blanket ban on gambling ads online, on television, and the radio.
